Govt: COVID-19 impact might increase in children if the virus changes behavior or epidemiology. A formation of a national expert group has been made to strengthen preparedness.

Even though children are not much affected until now due to COVID-19, the chances are that it may impact them. It could be probably if the virus shows behavioral change or epidemiology dynamics.

The government warned us and said they are taking necessary steps to prepare themselves to fight such a situation if need be.

A national expert group reviews the COVID-19 infections in children and approaches the pandemic in a renewed way to assist the nation's preparedness, NITI Aayog Member V K Paul said at a press conference.

The group has looked into the signs which were not available 4–5 months before, he added.

They will soon release guidelines for clinical profile, the country's experience, disease dynamics, nature of the virus, and the pandemic.

NITI Aayog Member V K Paul said

While we have been systematically reviewing scientific developments in this area, the group has been formed to take an updated view of the situation

There won’t be any lacking in the service provided for children that are affected. COVID-19 in children is often asymptomatic and rarely requires hospitalization.

However, changes in epidemiological dynamics or viral behavior can change the situation and increase the prevalence of infection. No undue burden has been placed on the pediatric care infrastructure so far. However, it is possible that 2-3 percent of children who get infected may need hospitalization

Paul informed that COVID-19 in children might take two forms -in one state, symptoms like infection, cough, fever, and pneumonia might occur, followed by hospitalization in some cases.

We reassure you that the needs of the pediatric population will be arranged and no gaps will be left. We will do an audit of what is required and would be required in the worst-case scenario and be put into action

Though most children may not be very symptomatic, after 2 to 6 weeks of getting COVID-19, few may show symptoms like fever, body rash, inflammation of eyes or conjunctivitis, breathing troubles, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.

He further added

It may not remain restricted like pneumonia affecting lungs. It spreads to various parts of the body. This is called Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C). This is a post-COVID symptom. At this time, the virus will not be found in the body and the RT-PCR test will also come negative. But antibody test will show that the child had been infected by the disease

Though most children may not be very symptomatic, after 2 to 6 weeks of getting COVID-19, few may show symptoms like fever, body rash, inflammation of eyes or conjunctivitis, breathing troubles, diarrhea, vomiting, etc.

Though treatment is not difficult, it has to be timely,

We have looked into scientific developments in the matter systematically and the data we have shows that admission of children in large COVID facilities is very small. It has not happened till now that pediatric infrastructure was unusually burdened with cases

Hardly 3% may need hospital service, he added.

But speculating all kinds of scenarios, Paul said they had formed a national group to look into it before finally adding.

In short, we are happy to report to you that we are working very systematically and comprehensively to address the problem of pediatric COVID disease now as well as into the future and we will strengthen our facilities as required,
