India to introduce ZyCov- D vaccine in 7 states

India will introduce Cadila Healthcare's ZyCoV-D Covid-19 vaccines in seven states, including West Bengal and Maharashtra, news agency Reuters reported on Thursday.

Rajesh Bhushan, Union Health Secretary, who reviewed the status and progress of "Har Ghar Dastak" drive with the health secretaries and (NHM) National Health Mission directors of the states and Union territories through a video conference today, advised the seven states to identify the districts with a high number of the first dose left out for the introduction of ZyCoV-D, a statement issued by the Union Health Ministry said.

The seven states are Maharashtra, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.

States have been asked to plan a time based on the PharmaJet injector and recognize vaccinators to be training for using it for vaccination.

Zydus Cadila Pharmaceutical company will supply one crore doses of ZyCoV-D, the world's first Plasmid DNA Covid vaccines, to the Centre by this month. The Centre government has already placed an initial order for one crore vaccine doses.

Previously, the Centre had placed an order to provide one crore doses of ZyCoV-D at ₹265 per jab and the needle-free applicator being offered at ₹93 per dose, without GST.

The CDSCO has recently approved ZyCoV-D for restricted use in emergencies in 12 years and above.

ZyCoV-D is the first DNA plasmid vaccine globally for human use, developed indigenously by the company against the Covid-19 virus. It is also the first COVID-19 vaccine free of needles and administered using PharmaJet, a needle-free applicator to ensure painless vaccine delivery, reducing any significant side effects.

ZyCoV-D has shown good stability at around 25 degrees for at least three months. The thermo-stability of the vaccine will help in easy transportation and storage without any problems of temperature change.

For prolonged use, a temperature of 2 to 8 degrees is sufficient. Also, as a DNA plasmid vaccine, ZyCoV-D doesn't have any problem with vector-based immunity. The DNA Plasmid platform allows generating new constructs quickly to deal with mutations in the virus.
