Temples to reopen with 50 percent capacity in Mumbai

On Friday, the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) issued an order stating that all places of worship in Mumbai can only allow devotees up to 50 percent of the total capacity.

With Covid-19 cases level in the state, the Maharashtra government last week announced the reopening of all worship places from October 7, the first day of Navratri.

Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said that all religious places would open for devotees, but they would need to follow strict safety protocols guidelines.

In a first wave, the state had reopened temples in November, a month after Diwali, and within five months of reopening, they have shut down again when the second wave hit in April.

“Based on the state government’s orders, all places of worship and religious places in the BMC area can allow only 50 per cent devotees and all Covid-19 protocols must be followed,”

As per the state government’s Standard operating procedure (SoP), maintaining social distancing and masking will be a must, and no prasad/holy water is to be served inside. The state has said the staggering of visitors and slots should be fixed based on the size of the premises.

Frequently sanitizing the premises and not touching idols, holy books, or other items is also mentioned.

Religious events and followers have still not been allowed. Standard prayer mats should be avoided, people should get their mats, and people above 65 and under ten years should avoid visiting, as per the SOPs.

The religious place to have Hand sanitizers are also to be made available to everyone.

The state government was under massive pressure from political parties, especially BJP, to open temples after relaxing many sectors like restaurants, malls, and shops. BJP had protested these places to reopen as many small businesses as flower vendors depend on them.
