After another solid grab in its third weekend in theaters, Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was set to pass the domestic box office total of “Black Widow,” a feat likely made possible by its status as a theatrically exclusive film.

Before the movie industry could calculate summer 2021’s final box office figures, they had to wait for Disney plus, which had the final say.

Because when you have a Marvel film like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings programmed during the final weekend of this season, and it delivers a Labor Day holiday opening of $94.67 million, it swings everything.

The superhero adventure starring Simu Liu captured $13.27 million from 3,952 theatres during the weekend, which was enough to push it past ‘Black Widow’ with a total gross of $196.45 million, as per Box Office Mojo. ‘Black Widow,’ which premiered in July, has earned roughly $183.56 million in theatres since its release. It has accumulated at least $125 million more on Disney Plus.

‘Shang Chi‘ breaking this record is a significant landmark for the movie theatre business, as it was released solely in theatres with 45 days of exclusivity – as opposed to ‘Black Widow‘ and many other new release movies, which have opted for a hybrid model.

The movie is now ready to cross the $200 million mark.
