Central and Western railway stop daily tickets for Mumbai trains

Central and Western railway stop daily tickets for Mumbai trains

The Mumbai suburban trains on Central and Western Railway lines are witnessing 42-45 lakh people traveling daily, out of which only 25 lac have monthly season passes. Railway officials said that most of the excluded daily passengers work on essential duties, buying daily tickets. Suburban train tickets are discontinued for temporary purposes.

A fully vaccinated person with a waiting period of at least 14 days after the second dose is given monthly season tickets by CR and WR.

Maharashtra government announced on Tuesday that all citizens, including government employees and essential workers, will be vaccinated to travel and board Mumbai's local suburban train. This would mean that despite being on essential duty, which is not fully vaccinated, they might not get daily tickets and will have to buy monthly season passes.

A railway official said

"We might not provide daily tickets to anyone. So far we are still having internal discussion on the same before we finalize on these issue,"

The Maharashtra government new order clarifies that only fully vaccinated will be permitted even for those on essential duty; daily tickets won't be provided to them from now onwards. Currently, government workers and essential are allowed to travel, ignoring their vaccine status.

The requirements have now been extended to even those working in essential and government sectors with the new orders.
Moreover, the railways can now issue quarterly and half-yearly season Passes apart from monthly passes. As of 25 October, the Central Railway gave 17.35 lakh MSTs, while the Western Railway has sold 8.15 lakh MSTs to the fully vaccinated since 11 August. CR has already sold 7.07 lakh MSTs since 1 October, while WR sold around 3.95 lakh MSTs.

From 28 October, the railways will operate at full capacity. The Western Railway will run 1,702 local train services and 1,304 Central Railway instead of the current 1,774 and 1,367 services on Churchgate-Dahanu, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus-Karjat/Kasara/Panvel, and Trans harbor corridors.

Mumbai local train service resumed for fully vaccinated passengers from August, after a break of four months. Passengers were restricted from traveling in local trains in the first week after the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
