The entire fleet in the island city of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking will now operate with electric technology, thus giving a boost to green energy technology in the transportation sector.

On the occasion of BEST day, Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray flagged off the 12 meter-long buses, which are fully electric and air-conditioned.
So far, 198 electric buses are working, and with the addition of 24, the total number of such buses stands at 222.

These 12 meter-long buses can carry 35 passengers and 24 standees. Wheelchair access for disabled persons, ITMS based on GPS technology, panic buttons, air suspension, and other state-of-the-art facilities will make it easier for the bus driver to operate without clutches and gears. It will also help reduce noise and air pollution.

BEST has announced that 140 more such environment-friendly buses will be introduced in services by the end of this month. They will ply mainly on office routes in south Mumbai.

Environment minister Aaditya Thackeray, who was also present at the event, tweeted, “We launched the next batch of fully electric buses, taking our fleet to 270 electric buses. The BEST has set a target of 1800 buses (45 per cent of the current fleet) to be electric by mid-2023. The buses are sound and emission-free.”

Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray also inaugurated the redeveloped Mahim depot in the presence of Mayor Kishori Pednekar. He said,

“This depot building will be of great convenience to the staff and also a provide relief to the passengers.”

The chief minister said that work is in progress to provide a single mobility ticketing system for BEST buses and local trains.
Regarding the easing of Maharashtra restrictions, the chief minister said,

“We are carefully relaxing the restrictions. The owners of the hotels and restaurants met me yesterday and requested relaxation in timings. A decision on the local issue will also be taken in the coming days.”

Meanwhile, around 1005 BEST retired employees were transferred 94.21 crores in their bank accounts by Thackeray.
