Helmets mandatory for pillion riders in Mumbai

Helmets mandatory for pillion riders in Mumbai

On Wednesday, Mumbai Traffic Police made wearing a helmet compulsory for pillion riders on a motorcycle. The rule will be applied in the next coming 15 days. "Violation of the same will attract a fine of ₹500 and suspension of driving license for three months," Mumbai Police said in a recent directive.

This new rule comes after the government recently updated the 1998 Motor Vehicles Act to add an instant fine of Rs 2,000 for two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets properly.

As per the update, fines of up to Rs 2,000 can be charged under the following situations:

If the motorist is wearing a helmet, but the helmet buckle is open. This will impose a fine of Rs 1,000

If a motorist helmet does not have a genuine BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification, you may be charged a ₹1,000.

Other traffic rules violations such as jumping a red light will also attract a hefty fine of Rs 2,000 despite wearing a helmet.

As per the notice, the Mumbai traffic police have found that mainly two-wheeler riders don,t wear helmets and violate traffic rules. Currently, the traffic police impose a fine of ₹500 on without helmet motorists or suspend their licenses. After new traffic rules are implemented after 15 days, the same penalty will be charged to pillion riders found without helmets.

Six persons were recently seen riding a scooter on city roads in a bizarre incident. One person was seen sitting on the shoulders of another. The video has gone viral.
