India to Restart International Flights From March 27 After Two-Year

India to Restart International Flights From March 27 After Two-Year

After a gap of two years, India today lifted the ban on international flights. Suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, overseas flights will be available from March 27.

Civil Aviation Ministry read a statement.

"After recognizing the increased vaccination coverage across the world and in consultation with the stakeholders, the Indian Government has marked to resume scheduled commercial international passenger services from/to India from 27.03.2022, i.e., the start of Summer Plan 2022,"

Air Bubble arrangements which allow two countries to operate flights into each other's territories subject to certain conditions - also stand revoked, announced Civil Aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

The current suspension of international flight operations will continue until 11.59 pm on March 26, the statement further stated.

The services were first suspended on March 23, 2020, soon after the Covid-19 pandemic. The DGCA had earlier announced to resume operations on December 15 last year. Still, it was taken back a day later following Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a review of the move due to the Omicron variant.

Special international flights have been operating between India and 37 countries since July 2020 under this arrangement. The Bubble arrangement hurt airlines' operations and their profitability.

According to the Union Health Ministry, just 3,993 new coronavirus infections - the lowest in 662 days - were recorded in India on Tuesday.

The international operations, said the Aviation Ministry, will have to follow the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare guidelines for international travel.

The aviation observer, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), had earlier suspended operations in March 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The latest statement, the DGCA said that international operations should resume with "strict adherence" to the health ministry's guidelines.
