Amarinder Singh, Former Punjab CM, resigns from Congress and announces a new party

On Tuesday, former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh resigned from the Congress and announced a new political party Punjab Lok Congress. In September, he had to step down as the chief minister following a rift with Congress Punjab chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

In his resignation letter to INCIndia President Ms. Sonia Gandhi, Singh said Sidhu's only claim to fame was that he would abuse him and his government.

The former chief minister said.

"He was patronised by Priyanka and Rahul, while you chose to turn a blind eye to shenanigans of this gentleman who was abetted and aided by Harish Rawat, perhaps most dubious individual,"

Amarinder Singh said on Twitter.

"Today I have sent my resignation to INC India President Ms Sonia Gandhi ji, listing my reasons for resignation. 'Punjab Lok Congress' is the name of a new party. The registration is pending approval with the @ECISVEEP. The party symbol will be approved after,"

After resigning as the chief minister, he said he felt humiliated at how the party high command had treated him. Amarinder Singh, one of Congress' most potent regional representatives, put in his papers after speaking to INC party president Sonia Gandhi and shortly before an important meeting of the Congress Legislatures Party.

He told media outside Punjab Raj Bhawan after submitting his resignation to Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

"The thing is that this is third time the party called the All MLAs. You have an element of doubt on me. I feel humiliated,"

Over 50 MLAs in the party had written to Gandhi seeking that Amarinder Singh be replaced as chief minister, which capped months of a fractious feud between him and Navjot Singh Sidhu.
