Biplab Deb Tripura Chief Minister Resigns before election

Biplab Deb Tripura Chief Minister Resigns before election

On Saturday, Biplab Kumar Deb Tripura Chief Minister said he had submitted his resignation to Governor SN Arya, adding that the party wants him to "work to strengthen the organization." The shock resignation comes ahead of state polls next year.

Mr. Deb announced after meeting the governor at the Raj Bhavan.

Mr. Deb told reporters.

"Party is overall. I am a loyal faith worker of the BJP. I hope I have done fair to the responsibility given to me, whether Tripura Chief Minister or BJP state president. I have worked for the overall development of thrTripura and to ensure peace for the state's people,"

He said.

"Too strong the base of BJP in the state, I need to work on a grassroots level in various sectors. I should work as a common Karyakarta (party worker) rather than being in the position of Chief Minister to form BJP government again in the coming Assembly elections,"

On Thursday, Mr. Deb went to New Delhi and met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda to discuss the party's affairs in the Northeastern state.

The resignations following reports of infighting within the BJP's state unit.

Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress, which has been engaged in a fierce battle to win over the electorate in Tripura, was tart in its criticism of the outgoing Chief Minister.

Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, related to the erstwhile Tripura royal family, and Union Minister Pratima Bhowmick, say sources, are frontrunners for the top post.

The BJP legislature party in Tripura is to meet later today to elect its new leader.

Senior BJP leaders Bhupender Yadav and Vinod Tawde, who are already in Tripura, have been appointed as observers for the legislature election of the party leader.

Besides them, the party's state in-charge Vinod Sonkar will attend the meeting.

Biplab Deb became the first BJP Chief Minister in the state in 2018, ending the 25-year-rule of the Communist Party of India.
