Ukrainian evacuation aircraft hijacked from Kabul to Iran

Ukrainian evacuation aircraft hijacked from Kabul to Iran

Ukraine's deputy foreign minister Yevgeny Yenin said by Russian news agency Taas that the plane was hijacked by "armed people."

Unidentified armed personnel hijackers took control of a Ukrainian plane. They flew it to Iran after it arrives in Afghanistan the previous week to remove Ukrainians, reports by TASS, a Russian News Agency.

Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Yevgeny Yenin said, as per TASS.

"Last Sunday, our aircraft was hijacked by other people. On Tuesday, the plane was stolen from us, with an unknown group of passenger onboard instead of lifting Ukrainians,"

He said.

"Our next three removing attempts were also not successful because our people could not get into the airport,"

The deputy minister didn't report anything about what happened to the plane, and regardless Kiev would look to get it back or how the Ukrainian citizens get back from Kabul.

As per TASS, a military transport plane with 83 people on board, including 31 Ukrainians, arrived from Afghanistan to Kiev on Sunday.

But, The Jerusalem Post reported that Tehran and Kyiv denied hijacking any Ukrainian evacuation plane in Afghanistan.

The Iranian Civil Aviation Authority denied the report, saying that the plane refueled in Mashhad and then flew to Kyiv.

According to the RBC Ukraine news agency, Oleg Nikolenko, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, denied the report as well, saying,

"There are no captured Ukrainian planes in Kabul or elsewhere. The information about the 'captured plane' that is being circulated by some media outlets is not true."

Nikolenko clarified that Yenin was only generally explaining the unprecedented difficulties diplomats faced in evacuating Ukrainians. The Jerusalem Post added that it is unclear why Yenin said that plane was hijacking by armed persons and "actually stolen" if this was not the case.

Many countries have launched evacuation missions to take their citizens from Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power on August 15. The swift evacuation is carrying out with the help of the forces of the United States, which are in control of Hamid Karzai International (HKI) airport in Kabul.
