India builds the world's highest road at 19,300 feet in Umlingla pass of Ladakh

India builds the world's highest road at 19,300 feet in Umlingla pass in Ladakh.

The height of this road is higher than the base camps of Mount Everest, and South Base Camp in Nepal is situated at the height of 17,598 feet, while North Camp Base in Tibet is at 16,900 feet as India builds the world's highest road at 19,300 feet in Umlingla pass.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), which functions under the Union ministry of defense, has built the highest travelable road in India, smashing the previous record held by Bolivia. The road is at 19,300 feet, and it passes through Umlingla Pass in Eastern Ladakh. It is a blacktopped, 52-kilometer road that connects many vital towns and cities in the Chumar sector of Eastern Ladakh, the ministry said in a statement.

As the ministry said, the altitude of this road is higher than the base camps of Mount Everest as the South Base Camp in Nepal is situated at an altitude of 17,598 ft, while the North Base Camp in Tibet is at 16,900 feet. This road is much above the height of Siachen Glacier, which is at 17,700 ft.

The road offers an alternative direct route connecting Chisumle and Demchok from Leh and will sign to promote tourism in Leh and Ladakh.

The defense ministry said in its statement.

"Infrastructure development in such harsh and tough ground is very challenging. In winter, temperature falls to -40 degrees and oxygen level at this height is almost 50 percent less than normal places. The BRO has achieved the action due to spirit and resilience of personnel who work in treacherous terrain and extreme weather conditions,"

The project was underway since 2017, and now, four days ago, the blacktopping has been done, marking the completion of the project. The road is at a strategic point as the villages connected by the road are very close to the India-China border in the eastern sector. This road was constructing under Project Himank.
