Puri, the first Indian city to have a clean 24-hour drinking water supply

The state government is rolling out safe drinking tap water supplies in 16 more towns, including Cuttack, Rourkela, and Berhampur. The move benefits around a 4 million urban solid population.

Naveen Patnaik led the Odisha government to declare Puri the first city to have a city safe drinking tap water to drive safe water for drinking.

The state government said.

"The State Government has scheduled to cover all muncipal areas of Odisha by March 22, making it state first to launched in India. Supplying tap quality water to drink to every household, like developed countries like US, Singapore, England, Japan," 

The statement added,

"It includes 24 hr helpline centre with IVRS system for grievance rectify, the launch of mobile water testing lab and quick response team for rapid rectify of water supply issue,".

The state government's scheme comes in the backdrop of 41.14% rural households supplied with tap water connections since the Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in 2019 by the center.

It said.

"Puri now joins international league of cities providing safe & pure water directly drinkable from taps. Naveen Patnaik Odisha chief minister on Monday dedicated 'Sujal-Drink From Tap Mission' to residents of Puri city to provide clean drinking water to local people,"

While ₹3.6 trillion Jal Jeevan Mission scheme aims to guarantee tap water supply in every house or 'Har Ghar Jal' to all rural households by 2024, several states have committed to providing tap water connections to rural homes the year 2024.

The statement said.

"After achieving global coverage of piped drinking water supply in town areas, the Government of Odisha moved to next level in public fulfillment with Drink From Tap Mission. This mission was launched by chief minister in October 2020 to provide drink from tap quality, 24 hr piped drinking water supply to every houses. Water received from houses taps can be directly used for drinking and cooking without further filtering or boiling," 

The water supply issue got prominence in the union budget presented in February again, wherein an outlay of ₹2.87 trillion was declared to launch the Jal Jeevan Mission. The focus is to supply drinking water to 4,378 local municipal bodies with tap connections of 2.68 cr.

The Odisha state government statement added.

"The Sujal Mission had launched to guarantee quality tapped drinking water for more than 15 lac people in more than 15 city areas,".
