On Friday, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, addressed the nation at 9 am. In a remarkable U-turn, the prime minister has decided to revokes all three agricultural reform laws that have sparked almost a year of huge protests by farmers. He said his cabinet would take the decision next month.

"Guru Nanak ji said 'Vich Duniya Sev Kamaiye, Taan Dargah Baisan Paiyeea'. It means that only by taking the way of service to the nation can life turn out well. Our government has been working with the sense of service, to make the lives of people easy,"

In September, Ram Nath Kovind, President of India, gave his consent for the three bills passed by Parliament. The three bills were: Farmers' Produces Trade and Commerce to Promotion and Facilitation Bill, 2020, Farmer's Empowerment and Protection Agreement on Price promise and Essential Commodities Amendment Bill 2020, and Farm Services Bill, 2020.

The bills were passed by Parliament during the monsoon session last year. Farmers have continued to indicate apprehension that the Centre's farm reforms would pave the way for dismantling the minimum support price system, leaving them at the "mercy" of big companies.
