Biden revokes TikTok, WeChat bans; Orders security review

A new executive order from the Biden administration revokes the WeChat and TikTok orders and other communications and financial technology software applications.

Senior administration officials said,

President Joe Biden is revoking bans on the Chinese-owned apps TikTok and WeChat today. Instead, review of software applications from foreign adversaries could pose a risk to Americans' sensitive data.

Biden has directed Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo to evaluate the apps and block the ones which pose security risks.

The order will replace former President Donald Trump's order, which tried to ban the use of those apps in the US of the Chinese companies, including ByteDance Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd., the tech companies challenged the order.

The officials also said,

The new order outlines the criteria that might harm Americans' sensitive data in the US's views. According to the White House fact sheet, the data will include personal information that would go to people directly linked to foreign adversaries.

Another senior administration official said,

The sale of TikTok to another American company is in the process of an independent national security review.

The announcement came when Biden left Washington for a trip to Europe, where China will be a focus on discussion.
