Ben Stokes, Star England all-rounder, has taken an indefinite break from the game, the England Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Friday (July 30). Stokes will prioritize his mental wellbeing and heal his index finger during his time away from the game. As follow, he will not be available for the five-match Test series against India.

Stokes had recently made his international comeback and led a second-string England side to a 3-0 victory over Pakistan in ODIs. Stokes was resting for the T20I series that followed.

The 30-year-old had to spend nearly two months away from the game after he suffered a broken finger in the Rajasthan Royals' opening game of IPL 2021. Stokes made his comeback for Durham in domestic cricket and asking to lead England in the absence of regulars.

Though, it is to be well that Stokes wasn't named in the original squad as he was recovering from the finger issue. Writing for Daily Mirror following the Pakistan ODIs, Stokes had revealed that he wouldn't have played the series in normal circumstances due to the finger issue.

Following a 10-day break after Pakistan ODIs, Stokes captained Northern Superchargers in 2 matches of The Hundred. Since he was naming in the Test squad, Stokes had to leave the competition mid-way.

ECB has backed Stokes' decision to take a break and said its primary focus is to look after mental health.

Ashley Giles, Managing Director of England Men's Cricket, said

"Ben has shown tremendous courage to reveal about his feelings. Our pkey focus has always been and will continue to be our people's mental health and welfare. The demands on our sport person to prepare and play elite sport are relentless in a typical environment. Still, the ongoing pandemic has extremely effected,"

"Spending notable amounts of time away from family, with very less freedoms, is extremely challenging. The increasing effect of operating almost continuously in environments over the last 16 months has had a major impact on everyone's wellbeingwellbeing. Ben will be given break as long as he needs, and we look forward to seeing him playing cricket for England in the future."
