BCCI submits proposal for six-team women's IPL from next-year

BCCI submits proposal for six-team women's IPL from next-year

The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) proposes a six-team Women's IPL from next year. At a Governing Council (GC) meeting of the Indian Premier League in Mumbai on Friday (March 25), a decision was taken that efforts will be made to start a franchise-based annual T20 tournament for women cricketers from 2023. A usual three-team Women's T20 Challenge will be played this year during the IPL.

The GC members, who met in person for the first time in almost two years, decided to give the first preference to the existing IPL franchises to own the teams. Outside parties will be invited to bid for the franchises once that option has been exhausted.

Explaining the idea, a GC member told Cricbuzz that the feasibility of a six-team league would be explored, starting with finding a suitable window. "Running the event alongside the men's IPL may not be possible. The details will be worked out in the coming days, and approval of the AGM will be sought," the GC member elaborated. This year, he confirmed, the Women's T20 Challenge, with three teams (four matches), will be played during the business end of the IPL, most likely in Ahmedabad. It was not organized last year.

A BCCI office-bearer told Cricbuzz recently that it is the board's responsibility to start the women's league, irrespective of its financial viability. The GC is encouraged by the sponsorship for the Women's T20 Challenge in 2020 when Jio had paid Rs 12 crore for the title rights.

The BCCI has been under pressure to launch the Women's IPL for quite some time. With Cricket West Indies (CWI) deciding to introduce a three-team league from this year, alongside the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and neighboring Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also making similar noises, it has become obligatory for the BCCI to fast track the Women's IPL.

In another important decision, the GC cleared the media rights tender for the IPL for the 2023-27 cycle. The Invitation To Tender (ITT) document, in all likelihood, will be out on Tuesday or Wednesday. As reported previously, there will be multiple options for the bidding parties who, it is learned, will be required to have a net worth of INR 1000 Crore.
