Brendan Taylor admits to the Spot-fixing approach

Brendan Taylor admits to the Spot-fixing approach

Brendan Taylor has admitted that he failed to report to the ICC an approach made to him by an Indian businessman to spot-fix. In a lengthy post on his verified Twitter handle, the former Zimbabwe captain and wicketkeeper also revealed that he could face a "multi-year ban" by the ICC for allegedly not reporting the corrupt approach.

However, the former Zimbabwe skipper noted that he has "never been involved in any form of match-fixing."

According to Taylor, an Indian businessman requested him to attend a party in India to discuss sponsorship and the future launch of a T20 competition in Zimbabwe, with an initial offer of USD 15000. Once he landed in India and went to a party, he was openly offered cocaine, which he 'foolishly' took.

This was secretly shot on camera, and the video was shown to him the following day with a request that if he did not agree to spot fix international games, the video would be made public. He was given USD$ 15000, which he said he took so that he "could get on a plane and leave India."

He disclosed.

"I was concerned. And with 6 of these individuals in my hotel room, I was scared for my safety. I had fallen for it. I'd by choice walked into a situation that has changed my life forever,"

As a matter of policy, the ICC would not comment on the anti-corruption matter, but sources in the know have confirmed to Cricbuzz that an investigation is underway. "It is ongoing and has not yet been completed," said the source, adding the player has confessed to the charges and will not contest. The public confession is also unlikely to get him a reprieve, and most likely, terms of agreement for sanctions will be agreed upon by both.

The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) sleuths suggest there is a chance that one case could have led to another. In some instances, confessions and declarations should be looked at with objectivity since there is always a possibility that mitigating circumstances are created. While the ACU officials admit that gatherings in clubs and pubs are every day in the bookies' modus operandi, mixing cocaine in drinks, according to them, is being reported for the first time in an India case.

Taylor played 34 Tests, 205 ODIs, and 44 T20Is in 17 years between 2004-21. He is the second former Zimbabwe captain to be in the anti-corruption net after Heath Streak, who accepted indulging anti-corruption activity and was banned last year for eight years.
