Broadcaster wants IPL 2022 to start from 26 March

Broadcaster wants IPL 2022 to start from 26 March

The (BCCI) and Disney Star have different views on the start of the (IPL) Indian Premier League 2022. Having, to begin with, indicated a 27 March start, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is believed to be considering if the broadcaster's demand to advance the launch by a day should be allowed to. This is one of the reasons the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not yet shared the league's schedule so far.

Cricbuzz has learned from different IPL sources that Star has been demanding a Saturday start as it wants to boost the IPL with a double-header on 27 March, a Sunday, which, otherwise, would not be possible. There cannot be on Monday (28 March) unless it is a national holiday. Generally, on the first day, there is only one match.

"We understood that a Saturday start helps the (Star) broadcaster to kick-start the league with a full bang with three matches in the first weekends. A Sunday inauguration would not allow that. The BCCI and the (Star) broadcasters were in discussion about this, and eventually, it could be on 26 March," a franchise official, in the know of the talks, has revealed. When approached, the Board of Control for Cricket in India office-bearers and Star officials have declined comment.

The BCCI promised to return the schedule and venue to the franchises by 20 February. The new developments, it is understood, have delayed things a little bit.

The BCCI has not formally announced the venue. There have been some discussions about whether the league can be spread across more venues considering that the Covid-19 threat to the league has considerably reduced. However, there is very likely that the BCCI will settle for Maharashtra (Pune and Mumbai).

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), kept in the loop, has identified the four grounds - DY Patil Stadium, the Brabourne, the Wankhede, and Pune ground - where the matches can be played. Still, the challenge for the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Mumbai Cricket Association has been to provide practice facilities for the 10 IPL teams. Last heard, the Mumbai Cricket Association is working on this.
