Chris Woakes, Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow pulls out of 2021 IPL

Many of England's all-format players have withdrawn from this year's IPL due to bubble exhaust and anticipation of a long winter season.

Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler, and Jonny Bairstow have joined Chris Woakes in confirming their withdrawals from IPL. Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes had also pulled out earlier.

Punjab Kings will replace Dawid Malan for the rest of the season by Aiden Markram of South Africa. Sherfane Rutherford has taken up Bairstow's place in Sunrisers Hyderabad from Mumbai Indians. Buttler (Rajasthan Royals), Woakes (Delhi Capitals), Malan, and Bairstow (Sunrisers) have all been named in England's T20 World Cup team and might expect to be calling in England's Ashes tour.

As a result, they face the chance of more than four months away from home, which includes quarantine time as they move from country to country to play. Woakesand Buttler is the father of young children, with Buttler just having celebrated becoming the father of the second newborn.

In recent days all players heading to IPL, which will resume on 19 September, would be required to undergo six days of quarantine. These may well have been a contributory factor in the abandonment of the Manchester Test.

Sam Curran, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Tom Curran, Chris Jordan, Eoin Morgan, George Garton, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, and Liam Livingstone are the England players still expected to participate in the IPL. Some are hoping to fly to the UAE on Saturday on commercial flights.

Only one or two others may not depart until after T20 Finals Day on 18 September. From that set of players, only Sam Curran and Moeen are expecting to be named in the Ashes touring party, though it would be no surprise at all if Moeen, a father of two young children, withdrew from that.

Indeed, the future of that tour looks more precarious than ever after the events at Emirates Old Trafford.
