Four retentions allowed in Ipl auction 2022 for each team

Four retentions allowed in Ipl auction 2022 for each team

It is understood that a consensus has emerged on the player retention issue for the upcoming Indian Premier League auction. In all likelihood, the existing eight franchises will be allowed to retain up to four players.

During the few last days of the recently-concluded season of the IPL in UAE, informal discussions took place between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)

The team representatives are on the way forward, and all parties believe in having agreed on the number of players a franchise can hold on to.

As reported by Cricbuzz earlier, a team is set to keep up to three Indian and two foreign players with the total number of retentions not exceeding four. There may also be a cap on retaining uncapped players - a team will not be allowed more than two.

It is learning that the player purse will be INR 90 crore, and in the subsequent two years, there will be an incremental hike, and the bag will go up to INR 95 crore and INR 100 crore. If a franchisee chooses to retain four players, it will have to spend around 40-45 percent of its purse, making it INR 36-40 crore less than the franchise that doesn't opt to retain any player.

It has also been conveyed to the existing eight franchises that the two new teams may be allowed to pick two to three players outside the auction with permission to take two foreign players if big Indian names are not available. It is unlikely the existing teams will be allowed the Right to Match (RTM) cards at the auction.

A formal announcement on the retention rule will be made immediately after the sale of two new teams, which, as of Friday (October 22), is expected to happen on October 25 in Dubai. A few bidding parties have, in fact, already reached Dubai.

The retention rules now answer the big question in the IPL - if Chennai Super Kings can keep possession of MS Dhoni. It is now clear that the Chennai franchise will retain the former India captain. Its owner, N Srinivasan, recently clarified, stating, "Dhoni is part and parcel of CSK, Chennai and Tamil Nadu. There is no CSK without Dhoni and there is no Dhoni without CSK." Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad expect to be the two Indians, with either DJ Bravo or Faf du Plessis being the foreign player on their list.
