ICC rejects Pakistan cricket board's four-nation tournament plan

ICC rejects Pakistan cricket board's four-nation tournament plan

The PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) proposal to have an annual four-nation tournament that features Pakistan, India, Australia, and England did not find favor with most of the International Cricket Council (ICC) members, it is learned.

Ramiz Raja, chief of PCB, had proposed the idea during the ICC board meeting in Dubai on Sunday and gave a detailed plan.

The media understands that a few boards supported the idea, but most did not favor it. "He (Raja) spoke about it at length, but most felt it is important for cricket boards to focus more on bilateral commitments. The ACC (Asian Cricket Council) members felt that as we advance, they will only have the Asia Cup as a multi-team event in Asia sub-continent and did not back the four-cricket nation tournament," a member who attends the ICC meet said.

At the same time, other cricket boards that didn't feature in the proposal didn't like the Pakistan Cricket Board's idea of going ahead with the tournament without them. Also, it was challenging to find a slot in the packed calendar.

"At the same time, the Future Tour Programs (FTP) is very tight, and it's hard to get in a new event at this stage for sure,"

the member added. In an interaction with the paper before the ICC tournament, Ramiz Raja had stated that he was taking this proposal ahead as an ICC Board member and not as a PCB chief.

Later in the day, Ramiz Raja, PCB chairman, tweeted, "Great discussion regarding the 4 Nations series today at the ICC meeting. As a concept, it was greeted and debated upon and seen as promoting interest in the game. Fingers crossed. More when I am back at the office tomorrow."

Have left to its members to decide whether to have women's Test matches or not. A team like India doesn't have a women's Test match calendar. However, they have played pink-ball Tests. In its press release, ICC informed that it had granted ODI status to several Associate members.

"Following the latest decision to grow the ICC Women's Championship to 10 teams, the ICC Board approved a recommendation that ODI status is expanded to many Associate Member women's teams to permit them to progress to global qualifying events based on ODI rankings," the ICC said in its press release.

The ICC Board meeting agreed with the recommendation from the ICC Men's Cricket Committee that more neutral match officials should be utilized as travel restrictions are lifted while building on the success of the use of home umpires.
