IPL reveals new format for IPL 2022 in two groups

IPL reveals new format for IPL 2022 in two groups

IPL's new format, starting with the 2022 edition, the ten teams have been given scattered based on the number of times the team won the IPL or made the final appearance and, accordingly, been divided into two "virtuals" groups for the league match. Group A will see five-time champions Mumbai Indians, who have got the top scattered overall, while four-time winners Chennai Super Kings will be top in Group B with the No. 2.

In that order, the other teams in Group A comprised Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR), Rajasthan Royals(RR), Delhi Capitals(DC), and Lucknow Super Giants(LSG). Group B features Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH), Royal Challengers Bangalore(RCB), Punjab Kings(PBKS), and Gujarat Titans(GT).

IPL announced the new format on Friday, and the IPL said in a media release that the ten teams would play 14 matches of seven home and seven away during the league phase that comprises 70 games. Each team will play five sides twice, both home and away. These five sides will include the four other teams from the same groups and one team from another group from the correlated row as per the seedings. For example, Mumbai Indians will play the other four teams in Group A - Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Capitals, Super Giants, and Super Kings from Group B twice each.

The other four games will be against the remaining teams from another group, two only at home and two away.

The home-and-away formula will not be applicable this season, though, because, due to this pandemic, the IPL has decided to restrict the league match to four venues across only two cities: Mumbai and Pune. While Mumbai will host most of the matches (55), the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium of Pune will host 15 games during the league phase.

Every team will play four times each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Sports Academy and three times each at Brabourne Stadium and the MCA Stadium. While the IPL will finalize and announce the schedule in early March, it remains to be seen whether Mumbai will get any matches at their home base at the Wankhede.
