More than 25% capacity crowds likely to be allowed in IPL 2022

More than 25% capacity crowds likely to be allowed in IPL 2022

The Indian Premier League in Maharashtra will likely see more than just 25 percent capacity crowds at the venues in the upcoming season. Although the first permission from the state government is only for one-fourth of the stadium size, BCCI is confident more fans will be permitted as the league progresses.

"That is our understanding of the game. Going forwards the stadiums will have more crwod than initial games," an office-bearer of the BCCI told Cricbuzz on Monday (21 March). "With Covid cases going down by the day, we are hoping more people will be in the stands."

The Wankhede stadium will have 9,800-10,000 people per an initial estimate. Neighboring Brabourne Stadium, with around 28,000, will have up to 7 to 8,000, while DY Patil Stadium in Nerul, big in size, will allow 11 to 12,000 fans. The Maharashtra Cricket Stadium in Pune will first fill 12,000.

With fans filling back at the venues, the BCCI is understandably excited. It has expressed delight over the presence of spectators for the recent international games in Kolkata, Dharamsala, Mohali, and Bengaluru against Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

BCCI secretary wrote in a letter to the state units.

"India has just wrapped up a good home run with a clean sweep, first over West Indies and then against the Sri Lankan team. The pink-ball Test in Bangalore witnessed a full house, and the team led by Rohit Sharma beat the opponents in all three departments,"

Meanwhile, the BCCI secretary invited the presidents and secretaries for the state units for the 26 March inaugural IPL game at the Wankhede. "The preparations for IPL have well and truly begun. The upcoming IPL season is filled with exciting opportunities, and now IPL has ten teams.

The cities of Ahmedabad and Lucknow have world-class cricketing arena and earn a team of their own. The fan base in these two new team cities and states will increase the popularity and reach across India even more. Our fans have been devoid of IPL action. I am glad they will be back this time adding to the excitement," he wrote in the invite.
