Pune and Mumbai to host league matches of IPL 2022

Pune and Mumbai to host league matches of IPL 2022

IPL 2022 will start on March 26, and the final set on May 29. The match schedule was drawn up on Thursday by the IPL Governing Council, who also decided that a league phase of the tournament would be restricted to just two cities: Mumbai and Pune. The DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and Brabourne Stadium, The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune will host the league phase 70 matches.

For playoffs, which will feature four matches, the IPL has decided to keep its venue options open for now. The Governing Council agreed that a final decision would be taken later based on the Covid-19 pandemic situation in India in April-May.

The IPL Governing Council also decided to keep open the option of allowing fans to attend the matches, subject to permission from the state government.

IPL will finalize and share the tournament schedule by the first week of March. The IPL this time will be a 10-team tournament with the addition of two new franchises - Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans - last October. At a meeting on January 22, all ten franchises had unanimously backed the IPL's first option of conducting the tournament in India.

The franchises had also favored limiting the tournament to just one venue - Mumbai - after the debacle in the 2021 season, which had to be postponed at the halfway stage when the second wave of Covid-19 swept across India breached the IPL bubble. In an internal review, the IPL concluded that teams traveling between multiple cities had been one reason for positive cases within teams in the first half of the 2021 edition. The tournament resumed in September-October, with the second leg played in the UAE - which had staged the entirety of IPL 2020.

As for the format during the league phase could not be confirmed whether the IPL will follow the 2011 concept, the first time the tournament featured ten teams. In the 2011 edition, the ten teams were split into two groups, and the tournament included 70 league games, and four playoff games, with all the teams in one combined league table. Every team will be played the same number of league matches during the league phase, 14.

Each team played the other four in another group, both home and away (eight matches), four teams in another group once each (four games, home or away), and the remaining team in another group twice, both home and away. A random draw decided the structure of the groups and who played whom across the groups once and twice.
