Simon Katich, Brian Lara, and Dale Steyn named in SRH new-look support staff

Sunrisers Hyderabad has signed on legendary West Indies batsman Brian Lara as the franchise's batting coach and strategic advisor. Brain Lara joins a new-look support staff that also shows the inclusion of former India cricketer Hemang Badani in a double role of fielding coach and scout. And as reported on 16th December, Dale Steyn will also join the franchise as the bowling coach.

Apart from Badani, Lara, and Steyn, the Hyderabad franchise has also secured Simon Katich as an assistant coach. The former Australia batsman recently served as the head coach of RCB before drawing out of the UAE stage of IPL 2021 for personal reasons. The Katich replaces fellow countryman Brad Haddin, who was the assistant coach of the SRH team.

The sweeping changes of the backroom staff at SRH come in the wake of a dismal 2021 season in which the team finished last of the standings after having made the playoffs in each of the earlier five seasons before that. Subsequently, the franchise parted ways with Trevor Bayliss, replaced by Tom Moody.

VVS Laxman had to quit after joining NCA in Bangalore. The 2016 Champions have, however, retained spinner Muttiah Muralitharan in their support staff. The Lankan legend, acting hitherto as the franchise's mentor, has been designated as strategy and spin bowling coach.

CVC clearance to come soon

Meanwhile, as reported by the website, CVC Sports is expected to get the all-clear letter from the BCCI soon. The perception in the IPL is that all the matter has been settled, and only a franchise agreement waits to be signed between BCCI and stakeholder CVC. That privy to the developments says things will move once the signed papers from the external committee formed to look into a business of the American Venture Capital firm are received by the board. The verbal go-ahead is believed to have been given by the committee, which featured a retired judge of the SC.

Gary Kirsten, the coach of the 2011 World Cup-winning coach of India, is in the contender to be part of the support staff of the Ahmedabad team, just as Ashish Nehra, a former India bowler, was also part of that all-conquering Indian side of 2011. Vikram Solanki, a former England batsman, may also feature in the coaching staff. CVC franchise had previously held talks with recent India coaches -Bharat Arun, R Sridhar, and Ravi Shastri. A final decision is expected after the American investment firm signs on a dotted line.
