Supersport, Sky pick IPL Media tender

Supersport, Sky pick IPL Media tender

Supersport of South Africa UK and Sky Sports are among a handful of parties who have shown interest in the media rights of the IPL (Indian Premier League), the sale of which is highly awaited in the world cricket markets. Many Sources within the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) have confirmed the purchase of the ITT (Invitation To Tender) document by the South African and UK broadcast stations, who are expecting to bid for the Bouquet D world rights of the IPL.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited, Viacom 18 Media Private Limited, Sony Pictures Networks India Private Limited, Amazon Seller Services Pvt Ltd, Star India Pvt Ltd,

Sky UK Ltd, Supersport International Pty Ltd, and Sporta Technologies Pvt Ltd (Dream 11) are the confirmed who have taken the Invitation To Tender documents, the cost of which is non-refundable Rs 25 lac. The Invitation To Tender will be available for purchase till 10 May.

There is talk about NetFlix, Facebook, Apple, and AirTel showing interest, but there has been no confirmation. Among the names mentioned, Media has reached out to a couple of Apple officials in India, but they chose not to comment on these. The BCCI official is confident that the price of the rights will breach the glass ceiling, even as a Sony official sounded cautious about the high pricing of the rights. The BCCI, as first reported by Media, has fixed Rs 32,890 cr as the combined base price for four packages, which will go for sale on 12 June.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has closed the deadline for clarifications sought by the interested parties on 30 April. Cricbuzz understands that each party has asked more than 100 questions to the board authorities. The clarifications are awaited in a couple of weeks which should address the concerns of the prospective bidders who, it is understood, wanted clarity mainly on the cap for the matches. The ITT has not said the final number of games for a season; the BCCI has only mentioned that it will charge the broadcasters on a pro-rata basis if the number of games is increased with the current cap fixed at 74.

There was also worry over the five percent increment mentioned in the ITT, which is the figure levied on the parties that want to challenge another bouquet. If an X, the winner of Bouquet A, wants to challenge Y, which has Package B for Rs 5000 cr, the former can do that by placing an increment of Rs 250 cr more. Following bids will need to be increased by five percent from the last offer. However, the BCCI has not clarified the value of increments in the e-auction of each category of rights.

In collaboration with former boss James Murdoch, Shankar, a former head of Disney Star in India, bought 39 percent share through their Bodhi Tree Systems in Viacom 18, a joint venture between Reliance Industries Ltd and US-based Viacom CBS.
