Fails with €100m bid for Lukaku by Chelsea

Fails with 100m bid for Lukaku by Chelsea

Inter Milan decided not to sell Romelu Lukaku after rejecting Chelsea's bid of €100m, including Marcos Alonso, a striker of Belgium.

Thomas Tuchel is eager to sign the striker. Lukaku is a more realistic target than Erling Haaland, who is likely to remain at Borussia Dortmund for another season. Chelsea hopes Inter's financial difficulties will eventually force them into selling their most significant asset, and they weigh up whether to test the Serie A club's resolve with an improved offer.

Lukaku played a crucial part in Inter Milan winning Serie A last season, registering 11 assists and scoring 24 goals. The 28-year-old has now developed in top strikers in football since its exit from Manchester United for Italy in the 2019 season. Tuchel sees it as a player who can turn Chelsea's uncertain attack into one capable of challenging the Premier League title.

Chelsea has also looked at a deal for Haaland but has received little encouragement that Dortmund will shift their stance on the 21-year-old. Dortmund is under financial pressure after selling Jadon Sancho to Manchester United for 73m, and it is likely to take a considerable offer to make them consider parting company with Haaland.

Chelsea, who has put Tammy Abraham up for sale, needs extra firepower after selling Olivier Giroud to Milan and weighing many choices.

They have monitored Bayern Munich's player Robert Lewandowski and are engaging in Harry Kane of Tottenham's. However, they admit that the chances of Spurs selling to the London rivals are almost empty.

That leaves Lukaku as a possible pick-out. Inter Milan, who sold Achraf Hakimi to Saint-Germain for €70m, needs to increase funds and were doubts over Lukaku's future after the exit of Antonio Conte in may as a manager. Lukaku had a close connection with Conte, who left after falling out with the board and proved himself in the English tournament.

Lukaku, who had a mojo at Chelsea before selling to Everton in 2014, remains satisfied in Inter Milan. He held a productive talk with Simone Inzaghi, replacement of Conte's, and are few signs that he will press for a move, placing the burden on Chelsea to make Inter Milan an offer too huge to reject. The deal could be hard to pull off if Inter Milan raises funds by selling their Argentinian forward Lautaro Martínez, linked with Arsenal.

Chelsea needs to reduce the squad and is open to the selling of Alonso. The left-back is not regular in the first eleven under Tuchel.

Chelsea remains in talks with Sevilla over a deal for center-back player Jules Koundé. and yet to make an agreement over a fee for France's center-back and will likely need to sell a defender to make a transfer happen. Kurt Zouma is available and has been offering to Sevilla as part of a deal. However, Zouma would prefer to stay in London and has been targeted by West.
