Arsenal confirms Lacazette and Aubameyang positive Covid-19

Arsenal confirms Lacazette and Aubameyang positive Covid-19

The Gunners got hit by an outbreak of the virus, seeing Willian Borges da Silva and Alex Runarsson tested positive before the Premier League opener.

Arsenal has confirmed that Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were positive Covid-19 cases before last week's Premier League opener.

Both men missed Arsenal's 1-0 defeat on August 13 at Brentford due to an unsuspected illness, along with reserve goalkeeper Alex Runarsson.

Arsenal has now revealed that all three players were laid low with coronavirus. Still, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be available for their next fixture on Sunday against Chelsea after posting a negative test during the club's latest medical checks.

What was said?

Arsenal has released an official statement giving an update on the striker's condition, which reads:

"Aubameyang tested positive for Covid-19 and was unavailable on the match at Brentford for last Friday.

"Aubameyang is now negative on Covid-19 testing latest checks, is well and following all agreement for return to play. He will return to training and be check out prior to Sunday's match."

However, Lacazette and Runnarson will not return for the north London outfit when they meet Chelsea at Emirates Stadium. Willian is also in doubt after becoming their fourth player to get in contact with Covid-19 in the past fortnight.

The club statement also adds.

"Alex Runarsson tested positive for Covid-19 and was unavailable on match at Brentford for last Friday. Lacazette is still recovering for Covid-19 and will not be available to play for Sunday's match,".

"Willian Borges da Silva has also tested positive for Covid-19 and is cohering to protocols. His health and fitness will be monitored and assessed ahead of Sunday's match.

"As part of Premier League protocol, all members of our first-team squad and support staff continue to be regularly tested for COVID-19."

Arsenal's nightmare start to 2021-22

Arsenal made the worst possible start to this new season by losing away to newly-promoted Brentford. The nature of the defeat will have been a cause of genuine concern for supporters as the team struggled to create any clear-cut chances in the absence of Aubameyang and Lacazette.

The former could return to action when Chelsea arrives at the Emirates. However, the Gunners will still be short on attacking options if Willian joins Lacazette on the sidelines for another week.

Depending on how well players' recoveries will go, Arsenal's second round in the EFL Cup match against West Brom on August 25 could also come in doubt. It will come in just three days before Mikel Arteta's side is due to take a trip to Etihad Stadium to play against Premier League champions Manchester City.
