On Friday at Rome's Stadio Olimpico, Euro 2020 Group A match played between Italy and Turkey. Italy kicked off the European Championships with a convincing 3-0 victory with Lorenzo Insigne and Ciro Immobile on target. Roberto Mancini's side had been infuriated by Turkey's defensive approach in the first half. Still, it broke through in the 53rd minute by a hard-hit cross from Domenico Berardi flew in off defender Merih Demiral and it was an own goal.

Italy, now unbeaten in 28 matches, doubled their lead in the 66th when Goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir parried Leonardo Spinazzola's drive. Still, Ciro Immobile reacted well to slot home the loose ball.

With a confident and curling finish after some sloppy defending from the disappointing Turks, Insigne made it 3-0 in the 79th minute.

Turkey lost their fifth consecutive opening match of a European Championship campaign.

The Azzurri, the 3rd goal, made history as it marked for the first time they had scored three goals in a match at Euros in their 39 attempts.

"It was important to start well at Rome, and it is a joy for us and all the Italians," Mancini said Rai.

"It was an awesome evening, I hope there will be many more evenings like this, but there are remaining six matches to go before Wembley."

Italy was determined to make a strong start five years on from their last significant games appearance, have failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and they started strongly.

The 16,000 people inside the ground represented the largest crowd in Italy for half a year, while those unable to get a ticket watched the action unfold on giant screens set up across Rome.

Mancini gave words to his players in the pre-match news conference that they should enjoy themselves and seek to entertain, and that was precise, what they did for a jubilant home crowd.
