Messi scores his first goal for PSG

Messi scores his first goal for PSG

The Argentine icon Lionel Messi produced a brilliant strike in the second half to give his career in France for PSG lift-off with a statement Champions League win. ParisSaint-Germain 2-0 Manchester City

Pep Guardiola Man city manager knew how to get the very best from young Lionel Messi, and on Tuesday, it had looked like he had worked out how to stop an aging one too.

But the Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola's worst fear was that Paris Saint-Germain's new superstar Lionel Messi would be capable of producing that one instant of genius when the sides met in the Champions League.

In 70 minutes at Parc des Princes, the former Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi had strolled around in his first European emergence at home for his new club PSG.

The City passed the ball around him, chasing an equalizer after Idrissa Gueye's eighth-minute strike, as Lionel Messi looked lost and out of sync with his teammates.

Then it happened.

Lionel Messi sparked into life with 15 minutes remaining in the game, running with the ball for the first before swapping passes with Kylian Mbappe and curling a lavishing strike into the roof of the net.

It was a moment of genius, the standout act of an entertaining game.

The 34-year-old Lionel Messi scored his first goal for PSG. Still, it is his 121st in the Champions League, and 27th goal in 35 appearances against English teams, 15 more goals than any other player, and it underlined why Pep Guardiola has, at various times, expresses him as a genius and the GOAT.

Together, Pep Guardiola and Messi won 14 trophies in four seasons at Camp Nou, including two Champions League, which has eluded Guardiola ever since. Indeed it's been a standard attack that the Catalan coach cannot win the competition without him.

Messi's hope of winning the trophy for the fifth time had looked over at Barcelona, with the Spanish giants uncomfortable in defeating PSG, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Roma in recent seasons.

The City's frustration was that they could not stop Messi from escaping after largely shackling the much-talked-about trio and playing mainly on the front foot.

The City's consolation is that they should still get out of Group A, although they have slipped to third with a crucial double-header against second-placed Club Brugge to come next.

After all, it was Man City's first defeat at the group stage in three years - and the first away defeat from home in four years.

Man City had their chances, not least when they hit the crossbar twice in as many seconds. First, Raheem Sterling's header was luminously tipped onto the underside of the bar by Gianluigi Donnarumma, only for Bernardo Silva to fluff the follow-up inexplicably.

But a moment of Messi magic crushed any hope of grabbing a point, and it is PSG that will leave the Parc des Princes believing they have found the missing piece to end their wait for Champions League success.
