One can lose WhatsApp chats due to many reasons. This can happen if a user changes the device or delete their conversations mistakenly. This could lead to the loss of crucial detail shared on the chats, including documents, maps, contacts, etc., and any unsaved media. But thankfully, there is a way to recover deleted WhatsApp chats using the chat history saved otherwise on your device or Google Drive.

WhatsApp doesn't save your chats on the servers but instead creates databases on your device's internal storage or your Google Drive. This can be used to recover any old conversation that has been deleted mistakenly or lost due to any other reason.

Follow the steps to restore your chat history,

Restoring WhatsApp data from Google Drive

Firstly, make sure that WhatsApp has been backing up chat history to Google Drive account. If you are shifting to a new device, then log in to your Google account first. Users can select to back up the chat option of history daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

To restore your WhatsApp conversation history:

  1. Install WhatsApp and verify your mobile number. Once sign-in and verification are complete, WhatsApp will prompt you to convert your chat history from Google Drive.
  2. Click on the 'Restore' option to complete this process.
  3. Once the process is done, tap on 'Next' to find your old chats.

If Google Drive doesn't have your chat history, WhatsApp will pull the same from local storage. This will not be on a new device, anyway.

Local backup restoring WhatsApp chat history steps

Go to your file manager on a device, or download one if you don't have it. Look for the WhatsApp folder, which usually is in your internal data. After getting into a folder, tap on Databases. Here you will find a backup of your chat history set out date-wise. Make sure it has the old chat of the date you want.

If you have WhatsApp data saved on an SD card, copy the latest entry in the Databases folder and paste it in the same name in your internal storage folder.

After then uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp and log in using your mobile number. Allow WhatsApp to restore your old chat by tapping on the 'Restore' option.

For restoring chat backups from a later date, pick the desired one from the Databases folder and rename it to msgstore.DB.crypt12 from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12. Be careful only to remove only the date and leave and rest same. Do not change the crypt extensions. Then Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, log in and then restore your chat back-ups.
